Mike Conley is officially back with the Timberwolves, agreeing to a rest-of-season deal with the team he was traded from just two weeks ago, a source confirmed.
The 38-year-old guard will be on the floor when Minnesota resumes post all-star break practice on Wednesday evening.
After Minnesota “sent” Conley to Chicago in a three-team deal days ahead of the trade deadline to shed salary, Conley was then re-routed to Charlotte, who ultimately waived the veteran guard.
Because there was a second stop between Minnesota and waivers, the Timberwolves were eligible to re-sign the veteran guard this season.
Conley could’ve signed anywhere, but with his family settled in the metro, his strong ties to his teammates and a team in title contention, he opted to return to the Wolves. There was an understanding Conley would re-join Minnesota shortly after he was waived, but the reunion was delayed for salary cap reasons until after the all-star break.
The Wolves had to add a 14th player by Tuesday to be compliant with NBA roster regulations. Conley was the obvious addition.
Conley’s role with the Wolves remains to be seen after Minnesota acquired Ayo Dosunmu at the deadline. The versatile guard commands 20-plus minutes per game, which little extra tick available beyond the top seven members of the rotation.
But even if he doesn’t play much, Conley’s voice and guidance will be valuable for Minnesota over the final third of the regular season and beyond.
