Boys basketball tournament roundup: Wayzata, Shakopee to meet in Class 4A semis

Holding a mere two-point lead with five minutes to play, Wayzata closed the game on a 9-2 run to avoid a major upset and beat Moorhead 61-52 on Tuesday in the Class 4A quarterfinals at Target Center.

The second-seeded Trojans will face third-seeded Shakopee in the semis at 8 p.m. Thursday at Williams Arena.

Isaac Olmstead hit two of his four triples in the final five minutes en route to his team-high 18 points.

Wayzata (26-4) outrebounded seventh-seeded Moorhead 47-35. Reign Battle scored 23 points to pace the Spuds (22-8).

Shakopee 85, Anoka 52

Luke Wherley had 25 points, eight rebounds and seven assists as Shakopee shot 57% from the field to cruise to a Class 4A quarterfinal victory over the Tornadoes.

Isaac Cordes added 12 points and nine assists for the Sabers.

Shakopee led by seven early in the first half before pulling away with a 15-2 run.

Trey Borchers had 15 points to lead sixth-seeded Anoka (23-7).

Totino-Grace 88, Duluth Denfeld 72

The second-seeded Eagles’ quest for a Class 3A four-peat lives on.

Chace Watley and Malachi Hill each had 23 points and six assists for the Eagles (23-5) on Tuesday at Williams Arena.

Totino-Grace will meet Alexandria Area in the state semifinals at 2 p.m. Thursday. Alexandria beat Byron 82-70 in their 3A quarterfinal.

MarNaries Ferguson scored 41 points for Duluth Denfeld (20-10).

Briefly

In Class 2A, both of the top two seeds advanced to the semifinals.

Top-seeded Albany rolled past eighth-seed Pelican Rapids 80-57. Sam Hondl led the way for Albany with 16 points, while Jack Welch had a game-high 29 for Pelican Rapids.

No. 2 seed Waseca held off Pequot Lakes 49-45 behind 16 points from Damarius Russell.
