Trump-backed Geoff Diehl to face Maura Healey in Massachusetts governor’s race

On a shoestring budget, and with the endorsement of the 45th president, Republican Geoff Diehl sailed to a primary victory and on to a November contest with Attorney General Maura Healey.

“I am proud tonight to accept the Republican nomination to be your next governor of Massachusetts,” Diehl said. “Today our hard work got rewarded by a convincing primary win.”

Diehl joined supporters in Weymouth for a victory party Tuesday night and to celebrate the win over his opponent, self-funded Wrentham businessman Chris Doughty, despite the fact the wealthy manufacturing executive dropped $2.4 million of his own fortune on the race.

Diehl’s campaign managed to win with less than $17,000 in the bank at the end and against an ongoing onslaught of television ads and the recent endorsement of his opponent by conservative radio legend and Herald columnist Howie Carr.

The endorsement of Trump, first announced last October, seems to have been enough to carry former state Rep. Diehl through the primary.

That endorsement was essentially the last voters heard from Trump about the race in Massachusetts until late Monday when the former president held a “tele-rally” for Diehl’s campaign, telling voters Doughty was nothing more than a tool of outgoing Gov. Charlie Baker.

“(Diehl is) the only conservative running for Massachusetts governor,” Trump said Monday night. “Geoff is a proven fighter who successfully pushes back on the liberal extremists.”

Trump’s endorsement of Diehl and outspoken distaste for Baker was enough to leave the incumbent with little hope of winning a GOP primary, despite generally being seen as a popular governor. Baker and Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito announced in December they would not seek re-election to third terms.

The Whitman Republican will have his work cut out for him in the general election. Healey’s war chest approaches $7 million.

Diehl has made a good start with a recent signature drive to add a question to the November ballot, collecting over 100,000 signatures to ask voters whether they would overturn a new law that allows illegal immigrants to get a driver’s license.

“One party rule does not work on Beacon Hill,” Diehl said. “I believe our state should never hand driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants. Maura Healey, she would just give them out.”

MassGOP chairman Jim Lyons was on hand to congratulate Diehl, who he said was the only candidate that would follow in the footsteps of Trump.

Bowie State professor questions curfews as crime reduction solutions

posted in: Politics | 0

The frustration over violent crime in Prince George’s County is understandable. But Charles Adams, Bowie State University professor and chair of the Maryland school’s Department of Criminal Justice, doesn’t see curfews as the answer to juvenile crime.

“What we know as criminologists is that curfews, for the most part, have very little impact, if any, on violent crime,” Adams said.

Adams was asked about a curfew for those under the age of 17, which would require them to be off the streets from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. on weekdays, and from 11:59 p.m. and 5 a.m. on weekends. It goes into effect starting Friday. Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks made the announcement on Monday.

Adams said data from the Justice Department’s Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention shows that most crimes committed by juveniles are likely to occur outside of the hours of the Prince George’s County curfew.

He said most crime committed by juveniles are likely to occur between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Data from the Justice Department’s Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention  released in April found that violence committed by people between the ages of 7 and 17, are  more frequent during school days. The time of day that acts of violence occur peaks at 3 p.m. on school days and 7 p.m. on nonschool days.

Also, young people under 17 are most likely to become victims of violence at roughly the same times, according to federal data.

Adams said the impulse to enforce curfews is a reasonable one on the part of adults. “We want our kids, especially our young kids, to be home between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. That’s obvious,” but he said policymakers should be wary of assuming that there will be a drop in crime by juveniles as a result.

Curfews could be “part of a comprehensive approach” to deal with juvenile crime, Adams said. That should involve leaders in education, recreation, criminal justice and parents “coming to the table and creating a comprehensive plan and approach to dealing with this kind of program.”

While Alsobrooks said juveniles involved in crime “don’t just need a hug” but need to be held accountable for their actions, Adams said he understands

“I get the message that she was trying to send … there’s a perception that we coddle our kids,” he said.

When it comes to dealing with juvenile offenders, “the behavior that they exhibit is not acceptable, but we have to understand that the person is a long way from being finished. They’re a work in progress,” Adams sad. “There are opportunities for growth.”

Op-Ed: COVID-19 Is And Continues To Be An Experiment For Global Mass Control

COVID-19

SPRING HILL, FL – COVID-19 lockdowns are slowly being lifted. The mask mandates have been proven to be practically useless for protecting the wearer or the people in proximity. One way grocery aisles, plexiglass dividers, social distancing of six feet were also useless. “Track and trace” sounded technologically positive but did not work to slow the spread of the virus. Schools, libraries, churches, sporting events are now open. The number of people in one’s house is not important anymore.

Unfortunately, a majority of our population, the old as well as the young, followed these unscientific government mandates for fear of dying from COVID-19. Above all else, parents wanted to protect their offspring and senior citizens knew they had physical vulnerability to the virus. However, there was a significant segment of the population that refused to follow the CDC mandates.

The CDC’s so called “scientific experts” broadcast their edicts without substantial evidence while cancelling highly qualified scientists that questioned their data and projections which prevented open debate.  The process of not being open to new scientific data and theories is not science, it is a top-down political control of the population. This occurred not only in the U.S. but worldwide and increased the ruling class’s power to eventually establish a one-world-government. This crisis formula of creating fear continues to be perfected until people finally realize the end goal of this technological technique is mass control of the globe.

The global lockdown demonstrated to narcissistic, evil world leaders and egotistical intellectuals how they can create paralyzing fear, that would allow them to curtail the people’s freedom and eventually enslave them. The more they can increase ridiculously restrictive mandates to gain greater power that restricts and eliminates the people’s freedom, the easier it will be to gain a bloodless world coup.

As soon as the fear of COVID-19 decreased, new potential strains of Omicron 4 and 5 were highlighted.  Using testing on eight mice, the pseudo-scientific community declared that citizens should receive a new booster shot for the new strain. Other new potentially more dangerous viruses will appear as needed. The good news is that citizens are becoming wiser and more aware of “experts” like Dr. Anthony Fauci who can use their platform to spew lies to advance their career.

Dr. Fauci boldface lied to Dr. Rand Paul in a Congressional Hearing that he had no connection to the Chinese Wuhan lab. He emphatically insisted that it was not financed by American tax dollars. Fauci forcefully asserted Its purpose was not to enhance the viruses’ detrimental effect and to be more transmittable, and difficult to curtail. Dr. Fauci denied any participation in the Chinese experiments to develop more virulent viruses that could cause a worldwide epidemic. Newly released documents show that Dr. Fauci is a sophisticated liar.

Although the COVID-19 epidemic is ebbing, California is calling for school shutdowns and compulsory mask wearing. In Washington, D.C. unvaccinated students will not permitted to attend school. There will be no online classes, so the students will not receive even academic instruction online. Many psychologists remarked that the shutdowns took a toll on children’s social and psychological development as well as delayed academic skills in reading and math, that will take years to remedy, if ever. These unprepared students will eventually come of age to join the labor market ill prepared to make a positive impact on our economy. Our economic future is bleak which has weakened America on every front. The U.S. is no longer the world leader inspiring other nations through our freedom, military dominance, technological innovation and with economic strength.

The COVID-19 pandemic was used to change the U.S. voting laws to allow universal mail in voting. Are Klaus Schwab of the World Economic forum and his cabal of world leaders going to win by spreading fearful scientific lies that frighten citizens into being zombies? Destroying the U.S. economy through these mandates will increase illness and death to panic others that weakens the nation.

This scheme by the world leaders is nothing more than psyops to crush the will of the people. These changes would usher in mass mind control. Some weak people will still run to whatever is introduced by the government elite and intellectual allies who want to control the people by proclamation from the top down. According to their mission, independent, free-thinking people must be eliminated.

The American people know these “scientific” edicts did not work in the past several years. This central planning is an attempt to remove our God given freedoms to control all the nations of the world. It is slavery for all of us except the wealthy and media elites.

Our forefathers worked and fought for retaining our constitutional republic. We need not to give up our individual freedoms out of fear. We need to stand up to preserve our Godly life, that has allowed us to innovate and prosper like no other civilization.

Here’s How NYC Tenants Can Test Their Drinking Water

The discovery of arsenic in the water supply at NYCHA’s Jacob Riis Houses is a scary reminder of how little control most people have over their taps. While most of the drinking water in New York City apartment buildings is perfectly potable, older plumbing can leach toxins, especially lead, during the final stretch from street to sink.

The discovery of arsenic in the water supply at NYCHA’s Jacob Riis Houses is a scary reminder of how little control most people have over their taps, especially when they rent apartments.

Most New Yorkers have nothing to worry about: Big Apple tap water starts off as the cleanest and most scrutinized supply in the state, with the water originating from 19 reservoirs and three lakes in the Hudson Valley and Catskills before flowing into the five boroughs, where it is subjected to 27,000 tests a month across 1,200 sampling locations overseen by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).

“NYC’s tap water is of the highest quality,” said Edward Timbers of the DEP, adding that it “meets or exceeds all state and federal health and safety guidelines.”

But that can vary once the water reaches individual taps, said David Soll, a historian and policy expert whose book “Empire of Water” tells the story of NYC’s H2O. While most of the water in New York City apartment buildings is perfectly potable, older plumbing can leach toxins, especially lead, during the final stretch from street to sink.

“New York City has spent billions of dollars to protect its upstate sources and has generally done an excellent job of this,” Soll said. “However, and this applies not just to New York but to many other cities, it has not done nearly as much to safeguard water quality once water leaves the city’s delivery network.”

A 2018 report by the Independent Budget Office (IBO) examined lead test data from 2006 to 2016 and found that the highest rates of contamination occurred in the neighborhoods of Ridgewood, Maspeth, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Co-Op City, Riverdale and Staten Island’s South Beach neighborhoods. Lead pipes and fittings are especially common in smaller, pre-war buildings, especially those built in the 1920s and 1930s, IBO found.

“Water is not the primary source of lead exposure in New York City,” said Patrick Gallahue of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, via email. “That said, lead can enter drinking water from plumbing materials, such as pipes, faucets and fixtures made with lead metal.”

Under federal guidelines, lead levels are considered dangerous when they reach 15 parts per billion, though no amount of lead is safe. The mineral is linked to developmental delays in children, especially kids under 5 years old.

Homeowners have options: They can pay to replace the pipes, remove lead fittings and address other toxins present in the water. There are even some grants available to help cover the cost.

But renters have little recourse when it comes to lead in their water. Landlords are not mandated to test for toxins or even correct the problems once discovered. The DEP lists buildings equipped with lead pipes on an online interactive map, but the data is incomplete and hard to find, said Jessica Bellinder, supervising attorney in the Legal Aid Society’s Bronx Housing Justice Unit.

“It seems like it’s eminently fixable and we have the data to do that,” Bellinder said. “Better public education would make a lot of sense.”

But for now, most tenants are on their own to learn about lead or other toxins in the faucets at the apartment they just dropped a security deposit on. So what can renters do to keep themselves and their families safe?

Get tested for lead

All New Yorkers can access free water test kits online, which the city says will arrive within 10 days of the order. The test includes two bottles and a pre-paid mailing label allowing residents to return the samples to a laboratory free of charge. The city says it will mail back results within 30 days. (Editor’s note: This really works. David Brand tested water at his last Queens apartment four times using the city’s free test kits and found elevated lead levels in water from the kitchen faucet but none from the bathroom faucet. That was helpful information, but made getting a safe glass of water a little awkward at times.)

In the meantime, tenants can purchase a filter that attaches to their sink or a pitcher to reduce lead exposure. But they aren’t cheap, they require routine replacement and they can take up to an hour to filter a relatively small amount of water. Plus, not every device is equipped to limit lead. Consumer Reports ranked the best and worst filters earlier this year.

If tests reveal elevated lead levels, residents may have to resort to “work-arounds,” Soll said. They can try running the water if the pipes have not been used for several hours or drinking and cooking with bottled water instead of tap, he said.

Boiling water will not remove or destroy lead, however. And running the faucet hot tends to strip more leads from pipes, leading to a higher level of the toxin in drinking water. The city’s health department recommends families use cold water to make baby formula and for drinking and cooking, said Gallahue.

Erik Olson, advocacy director of drinking water campaigns for the National Resources Defense Council, pointed to handy tips New Yorkers can use to test their pipes, including using a coin to see if the pipe is easily scraped or checking whether a magnet will stick to it. A non-magnetized, soft pipe typically means it is made of lead, he said.

“There are a lot of people that are drinking from lead pipes that don’t know it,” he said.

Olson recommends New York City residents who live in a building with lead service pipes use a filter that has been certified to remove lead. Ideally the owner would replace the pipes, he said. “But that can be a very costly endeavor unless your city is willing to foot the bill,” he added. “Landlords generally are reluctant to spend a nickel on replacing their lead service lines unless the city steps in and pays for 100 percent of them.”

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law passed by Congress and signed by President Biden last year carves out over billions of dollars for replacing lead pipes and removing lead from drinking water. Eventually, New York City or State could use that money to incentivize building owners.

“New York City needs to get in line to have a more serious lead service line replacement program that will pull out all these lead service lines,” said Joan Matthews of NRDC.

Testing for other toxins?

Toxins other than lead are a different story.

While the DEP routinely tests the city’s water supply for arsenic and other potential contaminants, it may be impossible for everyday New Yorkers to find out what’s flowing from  their faucets without forking over some cash. Commercial tests run from $25 for an at-home kit to $140 for an intensive examination by an accredited agency.

“If you only test for lead, it’s going to be about $50. If you test for arsenic, it’s going to be maybe $50 to $100. If you do a broad spectrum test, you could run into the hundreds of dollars,” said Olson.

If you can afford it, the tests may be worth the cost: Arsenic exposure can cause nausea, vomiting, abnormal heart rate, damage to blood vessels and a “pins and needles” sensation in the hands and feet, according to the state Department of Health. And although the dangers of lead exposure are usually targeted to children and pregnant women, Olson notes it can cause health issues in adults, including elevated blood pressure and cardiovascular disease.

The DEP releases a report each year on levels of the several dozen contaminants it tests for, including lead and arsenic. Last year’s report, the most recent available, shows that no levels of arsenic were found in the drinking supply.

Still, it remains unclear exactly how the arsenic got into the water supply at the Riis Houses. While individual wells, like the kind found in rural or suburban properties, can leach arsenic, it is rarely present in urban settings, said Stoll.

“If, as appears to be the case, the problem is confined to the Riis Houses, then something out of the ordinary is going on there that is likely not occurring elsewhere,” he said. “This is what the city needs to figure out.”

But NYCHA waited two weeks to disclose the arsenic tests to tenants, according to news reports, and did not begin alerting residents until a reporter from The City contacted the agency. On Friday, city officials, including Mayor Eric Adams, cautioned residents not to drink the tap water and handed out bottles instead.

On Saturday, a Riis Houses resident sent City Limits an advisory that NYCHA shared with tenant leaders, who in turn circulated the information among neighbors.

“Do not drink the water in your apartment or use the water for cooking,” the advisory reads, adding that the agency will provide bottled water to residents and take samples from every apartment.

By Monday, NYCHA said tests no longer revealed traces of arsenic in the water—though the water has remained cloudy, tenants said. Resident Sharon Stergis said she remained reluctant to fill up a glass from her faucet.

“That’s a big old No,” Stergis said when asked if she would drink the water in her apartment again.

“We’ve been buying and filtering our water here for generations,” she added. “This is just confirmation.”

That justifiable fear turns water from a public right into a pricey commodity—potentially foreshadowing a future where climate change further contaminates taps.

Last November, New York voters overwhelmingly approved adding “the right to clean air and water” to the state constitution, but the provision has yet to be tested in court as it relates to drinking water.

The constitutional amendment that was adopted last November is brand new and completely untested, said Michael Gerrard, an environmental law professor at Columbia University. “We don’t really know yet what, if any, teeth the courts will find it has.”

In the immediate term, Soll, the New York City water historian, said officials must get to the bottom of the arsenic contamination at the Riis Houses.

“What’s happening at the Riis Houses is a crisis and needs to be treated as such,” Soll said. “But it should be a wake-up call to city and state officials to address deep-seated problems like lead service pipes.”
