St. Paul’s Irish on Grand to close after 35 years

After 35 years on Grand Avenue, beloved Irish gift shop Irish on Grand will close its doors.

Irish on Grand owners Maeve O’Mara and Liam O’Neill said while business is currently thriving, they decided to close the store to give themselves more freedom and be able to travel – together for a change.

Since taking over the store in 2003, which was founded in 1990 by O’Mara’s brother, Dermot O’Mara, the couple said they have rarely gotten the chance to travel together due to the demands of the store.

The last day to shop at the store at 1124 Grand Ave. is March 30, but Irish on Grand will not cease to exist.

The online store will continue to run at irishongrand.com, where shoppers can buy clothing and jewelry, O’Neill said.

Irish on Grand will also continue its booth at the Minnesota State Fair.

“It’s the biggest, most messed up, confused place you’ll ever go,” O’Neill said of the State Fair. “It’s the best organized confusion. I’ve never seen anything like it.”

When asked what the couple will miss most about their shop, they answered quickly: “The people.”
