Police arrested a man who allegedly fired toward an officer’s squad that was pursuing his vehicle Monday night in St. Paul.

The officer wasn’t injured. Officers checked the Summit-University area and didn’t find anyone who’d been struck or residences damaged by gunfire, said Sgt. Toy Vixayvong, a St. Paul police spokesman.

The incident began about 11 p.m. Monday when an officer tried to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation at Central Avenue and Chatsworth Street.

The driver fled in his vehicle, but another officer found the vehicle near Central Avenue and Dale Street and followed it. The driver stopped a short time later and, as the officer was waiting for back-up, the driver left again. The officer followed.

As the vehicle headed west on St. Anthony Avenue and Western Street, the person in the vehicle shot at the officer in the squad, Vixayvong said. The officer saw several muzzle flashes and the rear window of the suspect’s vehicle shattered. The officer did not return fire.

The driver kept going before crashing into a parked car in the 800 block of Fuller Avenue. He tried to walk away from the crash, but officers apprehended him without further incident, Vixayvong said. Police found an AR-15-style rifle, which had been stolen, in the vehicle.

The 26-year-old man was taken to Regions Hospital to be evaluated due to the crash. He was then booked into the Ramsey County jail on suspicion of attempted murder, assault, fleeing police in a vehicle, possession of a firearm by an ineligible person and possession of a stolen firearm.
