Source: Vikings will sign quarterback Daniel Jones to practice squad

After clearing waivers this week, quarterback Daniel Jones plans to sign with the Vikings.

A source confirmed the move to the Pioneer Press shortly after Fox Sports insider Jordan Schultz broke the news.

It sounds like Jones will start his tenure with the Vikings on the practice squad as a way to get acclimated to his new surroundings. Though it should go without saying, the decision to sign Jones has absolutely no impact on quarterback Sam Darnold and his role as the starter.

The idea of Jones signing with the Vikings picked up steam over the weekend after he was granted his release from the New York Giants. He reportedly had a number of interested suitors before ultimately choosing to sign with the Vikings.

The move makes sense for both sides.

Not only does it gives Jones a soft landing where he can try to rebuild his image without much pressure, it gives the Vikings a talented player who could potentially serve as the backup to prized rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy next season.

Originally selected by the Giants with the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Jones has thrown for 14,582 yards and 70 touchdowns in his career, and he has also rushed for 2,179 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Maybe the best game that Jones has ever played in the NFL came a couple of seasons ago when he walked into U.S. Bank Stadium and led the Giants to a playoff win over the Vikings. He was incredibly impressive, completing 24 of 35 passes for 301 and a pair of touchdowns, to go along with 17 carries for 78 yards.

That performance earned Jones a big pay day as he signed a 4-year, $160 million contract extension with the Giants. He eventually became a lightning rod for criticism after struggling with consistency and was benched last week in favor of quarterback Tommy DeVito.
