McKenna Johnson led four Gophers in double-figure scoring as the Minnesota women’s basketball team smoked Massachusetts-Lowell, 82-37, on Tuesday night at Williams Arena.
Johnson had 13 points, followed by Taylor Woodson’s 12, and Tori McKinney came off the bench to add 11 points and seven rebounds for the Gophers, who improved to 3-0.
The Gophers won on the strength of their defense; UMass-Lowell (0-3) shot 25 percent from the field (14 for 56) and committed 16 turnovers that Minnesota turned into 21 points.
Mallory Heyer ripped down a game-high 10 rebounds, and Sophie Hart added 10 points and six rebounds. Minnesota outrebounded the River Hawks 53-32 and started the game with an 11-0 run.
Junior guard Mara Braun, who leads the Gophers in scoring with 15 points a game, scored seven points on 3-for-9 shooting. She was 1 for 6 from 3-point range.
Rayne Durant and Abbey Lindsay each had a team-high 10 points for Lowell.
The Gophers play this weekend in the Briann January Classic in Tempe, Ariz. They’re set to play Oregon State on Saturday and Southern Methodist on Sunday.
