Recaps of Thursday night’s state tournament quarterfinals:
Edina 3, Farmington 1
The defending champion Hornets learned in the evening what other favorites before them gathered throughout the day Thursday in the Class 2A quarterfinals in St. Paul.
There are no gimmes in this year’s tournament.
The top seed survived in a 3-1 win. However, what’s normally a cakewalk in the No. 1-8 matchup was anything but, as eighth-seeded Farmington trailed just 2-1 in the final minute before Cate McCoy’s empty net goal secured Edina’s spot in Friday’s semifinals. The Hornets will play either fifth-seeded Holy Family Catholic at 8 p.m. Friday at Xcel Energy Center.
Edina certainly did control play against the Tigers. The Hornets out-shot Farmington 39-8. Still, the game remained scoreless well until the second period before McCoy lit the lamp more than five minutes into the stanza to put the Hornets on top.
The lead remained at 1-0 until Lorelai Nelson scored on the power play more than six minutes into the third period to add an insurance goal Edina ended up needing. Because less than two minutes later, Taylor Risch scored on the power play to bring Farmington (18-8-3) to within a goal.
Addison Moudry recorded 36 saves for the Tigers.
Edina (24-3-1) has now reached the state semifinals in 11 straight seasons.
Holy Family Catholic 3, Moorhead 1
Making their first-ever state tournament appearance, the fifth-seeded Fire figured they’d hang out at Xcel Energy Center for the entire weekend.
