The St. Thomas women’s hockey team recorded its first-ever sweep of a nationally-ranked team by shocking No. 4 UMD 4-3 in overtime Friday night.

St. Thomas had topped UMD 3-2 on Thursday night in the first leg of the two-game series between the teams.

The Tommies (7-17-2 overall) seized a 2-0 lead early in the second period on goals by Rylee Bartz and Chloe Boreen before the Bulldogs (15-9-2) stormed back with three goals to take a 3-2 edge into the third period.

St. Thomas knotted the score 3-all on a goal by Lauren Stenslie midway though the third to send the game into overtime.

Ella Borger put the finishing touches on the upset victory with the game-winning goal at 3:05 of the extra session to set off a wild celebration in Mendota Heights.
