A Hastings man died early Wednesday after trying to remove a dead deer from the road.

The 65-year-old hit a deer while driving west on Dakota County Road 46 near General Sieben Drive in Marshan Township, south of Hastings, according to the Dakota County sheriff’s office.

The man had pulled over on the north shoulder to clear the deer from the road when another driver stopped to help.

The second driver witnessed as an eastbound vehicle hit the 65-year-old man.

Dakota County officers received a call about the crash at 6:35 a.m. and, though they provided life-saving measures, the man did not survive. His name was not immediately released.

“The driver of the vehicle that struck the pedestrian was uninjured and is cooperative,” Sheriff Joe Leko stated in an X post.

The investigation remains open.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the victim’s family and friends on their tragic loss,” Leko shared.
