Women’s basketball: Gophers star Mara Braun sidelined indefinitely with broken foot

Gophers women’s basketball star Mara Braun broke a bone in her right foot and will be sidelined indefinitely, according to head coach Dawn Plitzuweit on Friday.

Braun’s injury is the same one she suffered and had surgery on last season. “The chances of that happening are incredibly slim,” Plitzuweit said. “But unfortunately it happened.”

Braun, a Wayzata native, was limited to 20 games last season. He was sidelined in late January but returned in late March.

Plitzuweit said Braun is meeting with foot specialists to determine recovery. “Too premature to know what that looks like,” Plitzuweit said. “Obviously the most important thing is her long-term health and then getting her back to playing at the highest level that she was playing at. She is a fantastic player.”

Plutzuweit said she didn’t know if Braun could return this year “or beyond.”

Braun was injured during a shoot around and missed the 81-52 win over Eastern Illinois on Wednesday. She has been the Gophers leading scorer (13.6 points per game) and distributor (4.0 assist) through five games this season.
