Vikings linebacker Blake Cashman dealing with turf toe

It appears that the Vikings could be without linebacker Blake Cashman when they host the Detroit Lions on Sunday afternoon at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Talking to reporters on Wednesday afternoon at TCO Performance Center, head coach Kevin O’Connell confirmed that Cashman is dealing with turf toe. He suffered the injury a couple of weeks ago while the Vikings were playing the New York Jets in London.

“We’ll have him work through it and get back on the field as soon as possible,” O’Connell said. “We’ll see if he can get some limited work in this week and maybe have a chance to go.”

If Cashman can’t go this weekend, linebacker Ivan Pace Jr. would take his place as the main communicator on defense. It’s a role that Pace has some familiarity with dating back to last season when he relayed the play calls from defensive coordinator Brian Flores.

The absence of Cashman would also thrust linebacker Kamu Grugier-Hill into the spotlight once again. He’s already filled in at different points this season and has stepped up with a pair of interceptions to his name.
